Welcome to the darkside...

You have one?

I'm scared about how much technology I'll carry now. Camera, laptop, kindle, various hard drives. I bet my insurance agency would love that....

What do you think about the changes in the 2.0 compared to 1.0?

I kinda prefer the design of the first but, wow, is 2.0 sleek and sexy.

1.0 is easier to hold, lighter and overall an easier reading experience. I'm getting used to the buttons in 2.0 but don't like them as much. Without the leather case, 2.0 is hard to hold.

That said, I'd say 2.0 is a minor improvement over 1.0. This is largely because I hold out hope for the text-to-speech feature to replace audio-books on drives, the UI is a bit better, and I like the fact that it will turn the radio on for you when you go shopping. I was always forgetting to turn the switch on in the first Kindle.

Re: Don't forget your towel...

I KNOW! I have to find a Don't Panic sticker for it.

Oooh! OOOH! Can I touch it?!?
abmann From: abmann Date: March 6th, 2009 01:39 pm (UTC) (Link)
If I have it when I next see you, sure. :D

I'm especially interested in two things:

1) Contrast - can you read it easily? Is it okay on the eyes?

2) Physical functionality - I've heard it's an improvement over the last version, so I'd like to know if that's the case (i.e. page turns, etc.).

Gratzi!

With my limited interaction last night:
1) Yes. The E Ink display is lovely and contrasty. I would describe it as if my eyes were resting on a pillow while I read it.

2) The buttons are a little tight to press but no big deal. It is easy to use with one hand. I keep wanting to touch the screen to click buttons rather than use the little joystick: too much iPhone use for me. :)

So, it isn't 100% intuitive for me to use but that will get easier over time. It is, however, way to easy to buy books from their website with it!

That's good to know, thank you!

I was going to point out that you can check Wikipedia all the time now, but Alt-text already beat me to it. You can also read all those free books that no one is going to read.

But you can't annotate your copies. Maybe you should think about that while you're reading those books you downloaded in the potty.

I agree that the Kindle is a little limited. No annotation, no touch screen, DRM. It is, however, linked into a crazy huge book database, friendly, little, light and ALL MINE.

It also much more affordable than iLiad which includes all the above features minus the size, utility and free 3G service. :)

I almost took it into the bathroom last night but I had to let it charge.

Also, when you turn it off, it throws a neat classic literature icon on the screen. Neat. I currently have John Donne on mine.

Actually, all things considered, I'm pro-kindle. It's not for me, but it's good stuff.

Just don't get poop on it or you'll be reading your own poop.

I DUNNO I ONLY HAVE ONE HAND AND AM PRETTY LAZY ABOUT PUTTING THINGS DOWN AND PICKING UP NEW THINGS.

Perhaps if you got a hook hand on your other arm, and then permanently put a sponge or towel on said hook. Then you have a hand for holdin' and a hand for wipin' things.
