Portrait of a Young Man as The Artist

lady_fox and I ate at Brasserie v last night. This place is rivaling Harvest for my favorite restaurant in Madison.
  • They gave us free beer when we had to wait for them to find the one we ordered.
  • Dozens of Belgian Triples!
  • A knowledgeable and helpful waitstaff.
  • I could see into the kitchen.
  • So much lardon in my stew.
  • My first mussel experience.
  • The best aioli I've ever had.
  • An exceptionally well balanced mousse.

Yeah. Fantastic meal. We tipped her 47% of the bill. The owner even came and chatted to us about the beer we ordered because he hadn't tried it yet.

In other news, dinner with sculplady tonight. Butterflies.

You've never had mussels before?

Why was the aioli so good?

Nope, never. I don't think I've seen it on a menu at a restaurant I'd trust to do them well recently.

It was the perfect balance of tangy, spicy and creamy. It was just fantastic.

Weird. If it's something you like, you should be less trepidatious about ordering it in the future. Almost no restaurant will use fresh since the price jump between frozen and fresh mussels is somewhere in the 10-15/lb range. So pretty much everyone just throws frozen mollusks into a pan of wine and cooks till hot.

Well now, yeah. It's easier to get fresh or at least well-treated frozen mollusks to the midwest these days than even a few years ago.

Yeah, we had a great meal there last week. Excellent food, and when I was waffling about ordering frites or bread, the waitress threw the bread in for free. Great compound butter (port wine) that night.

Last night was a rosemary lemon butter. I wanted to dip the fries in it!

Man.. that aioli. *dies*

You should show your mussels after going to the gym instead.

Thank you and goodnight!

I follow the LJ group uw_photo. It's underwater photography, not drunk UW students.

I already get the later from some other people on my flist.

I went there for my birthday back when they first opened and it was horrible. 30 bucks for a cheese plate that was four tiny pieces of cheese and the staff knew nothing about the beers. Also the toilets started over flowing all over the floors about one drink in and the plumbing company ran a huge hose through the dining room bumping into people trying to eat.

Sounds like things have improved since then. Mmm Belgians.

Ha! Yeah, much better without the poop all over the floor. But, that's just me. ;)
