Whee
McCain chooses Palin for VP.
Female. 2 years experience as Alaska's governor. Linked to corruption charges. Pro-life.

What was that about too little experience in the candidate McCain has been talking about?
Curious. I do admit that I'm pleased he chose a woman. That's really the last barrier for any minority candidate to run for president. I don't think it will grab many of Clinton's supporters though. Well, hopefully.

I get the distinct impression that several (many?) told McCain to take his nomination and shovel it.

Either that, or he and the republitards honestly think that American females are dumb enough to change their votes from a pro-choice with decades of experience to a pro-life with weeks of experience simply due to the presence of a vagina.

Where do you get that impression about shovels?

I can't pinpoint it exactly, but it seems like the GOP has a sinking ship sort of mentality.

Pawlenty, Romney, Richardson, and Huckabee all seemed to me that they actively didn't want to be on the ticket.

What are you talking about? Pawlenty has been selling himself hard to get on that ticket. Ditto Romney.

posturing. didn't buy it.

Romney would have been a hilarious choice, no? :)

If we're going for funny, I would pick Ted Stevens.

A1) The funnys would have been Al Gore (or Keys for the real LOLZ).
B2) This pick came out of nowhere. Romney and Pawlenty both said yes in the "Do you like me -- YES -- NO -- MAYBE" gym-note.
C3) It's spelled new-cle-er.

He only chose a woman to try and dodge some of the "McSame" bullets and to go after some of Obama's thunder as a groundbreaking candidate.

The Obama campaign would only hurt themselves if they tried to point this out in attack ads. They've got a lot of savvy supporters though, let the blogosphere do the dirty work for them. Hammer them like hell on experience, and leave the "so why'd he choose her?" as an open question with an obvious answer: desperation.

I think the disgruntled Hillary supporter numbers have fallen enough that they aren't a serious threat, it's just that they're loud and the media loves to give them a voice. A few of the cheesecakers may defect over this, but I don't think it'll be a serious drain. Especially if a lot of women voters see this as pure pandering.

I agree with you on all of the above. however, I do believe a number of women will jump ship just to vote for a woman - some men too, probably. These people are dumb.

I can't stop smiling about this pick. There are so many ways to attack it.

Any temptation Hillary supporters will feel(limited, given the contrasting records) should evaporate as soon as Clinton lays into her.

oooh.. do you think she will?
darkskywatcher From: darkskywatcher Date: August 29th, 2008 06:26 pm (UTC) (Link)
Why wouldn't she?

The clinton's speeches this week were off the hook good for Hope. I was sad it wasn't the DNC coup I really wanted to happen.

That's really the last barrier for any minority candidate to run for president.

Don't forget the Mondale-Ferraro ticket back in '84, though. Of course, setting up an uncharismatic lame bucket like Mondale against Reagan, she may as well have been a third party veep candidate.

Still haven't had a gay atheist candidate yet. That'll be the real hard sell.

His whole picking a woman thing is just a slap in the face, and it insults my intelligence, honestly. She's a PRO-LIFE woman, which means she's clearly not a feminist. No-brainer.

I take issue with "the last barrier for any minority candidate to run for president". Obama is the most white black man since Colin Powel. He would have never made it if his skin was dark ebony and he talked like he was from the streets. Likewise, name for me some high ranking officials who roll thier r's or have yellow skin? Moreover, point out some prominent non-white women in political power in America. Just because I'm against affirmative action, doesn't mean I don't recognize a system that makes it very difficult to come in through the front door.

This election is good, but it's not the end of the line.

Who cares about the experience of the #2 ... they are a heartbeat away from needing it. That is a LONG distance.

How old was McCain again?

Oh. Nevermind :)

From McCain's camp, I think it was a very swift move. You know if he chose basically any other white male, his ticket would be painted as the most stalwart duo to ever walk the planet in contrast to Obama. (whether or not it was true) He had to do something "exciting".

I've known about Palin for a few years. I've been quietly following her.. because I have a fiery, passionate hatred for her. As a person she seems amazing. As a politician I have huge issues with her. But... most people haven't been quietly following her career for several years.
