It seems creepy to me.

That's half the point. Veins and stuff.

Good. :)

The veins don't bother me. What I find disturbing is the distention of the face in order to have the mouth open like that.

I'm like a snake?
alibee From: alibee Date: January 8th, 2007 05:10 am (UTC) (Link)
Not really, no. :)

it's creepy but i like it a lot.
abmann From: abmann Date: January 7th, 2007 04:18 am (UTC) (Link)
Why does it creep you out? I've seen lots of different reasons now. :)

the way that the onion looks like blood, and while you can see it's *not* blood, the juxtaposition of the onion looking bloody while the veins are blue and cold... the way the symbol for human vitality is placed in this object unrelated to our pulses while it's deliberately removed from the rest of the image... it's disconcerting.

but i love disconcerting things. i love the way such a jarring image makes you think about your assumptions. i love the beauty shown when you turn perceptions upside down.

Yeah. I'm totally creeped out, too. And it's not the veins.
It also made me think of a nosebleed.

Looks like a heart maybe?
rianwyn From: rianwyn Date: January 7th, 2007 04:34 am (UTC) (Link)
Not really... it seems that hermitgeeko and I imagined the same thing. Awful noseblood that ends in a gob of bloody bubble-ness.

Overall when I look at it I feel super uncomfortable... even now that I know it's just you biting an onion. And onions are delicious (though I suspect you'd appreciate that more if you'd take the skin off, silly...)

I've been trying to pinpoint exactly why it bothers me so much, but it's really difficult for me. My stomach reacts viscerally.

So as not to leave myself with such icky-ness, I'll leave you with the best use of a red onion that I've come across in the past few months. Why don't you put yours to some good use? This recipe is spot-on and delicious. And I'll make it again tomorrow, but I'll tweak to have more squash and less bread - a panzanella from Michael Chiarello: http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/recipes/recipe/0,,FOOD_9936_35361,00.html?rsrc=search

You'd get to explain to everyone why you have a half naked picture of your college buddy on your desktop. :)
fencert From: fencert Date: January 6th, 2007 10:34 pm (UTC) (Link)
Hmm, the Onion Knight was a lesser character in the Song of Ice and Fire series- which I hear is terribly popular. Could people be getting things confused?
abmann From: abmann Date: January 7th, 2007 04:16 am (UTC) (Link)
Mebbie but Onion Knight only displays in my journal. God forbid people like the picture. :P
fencert From: fencert Date: January 7th, 2007 06:02 pm (UTC) (Link)
Oh, so they find the pictures by thumbnail and not by a word search of content? I see... never mind!
bizarre From: bizarre Date: January 7th, 2007 04:10 am (UTC) (Link)
this is my favorite so far.

Seriously, would you consider allowing a print to be made? I would love to hang this up.
abmann From: abmann Date: January 7th, 2007 04:14 am (UTC) (Link)
All my photos are for sale. :) Price depends on size and if you would like a frame. Trust me, I'm reasonable. You can even ask fencert.

I would probably be looking at an 8 x 10

I love framing things myself :)

That is my creative side
abmann From: abmann Date: January 7th, 2007 04:41 am (UTC) (Link)
Totally doable. I emailed you further info. :)
bizarre From: bizarre Date: January 7th, 2007 04:42 am (UTC) (Link)
nifty!

Am I weird? Because I knew right away that it was an onion in your mouth and I find nothing creepy about it?

Maybe it is the art skool nerd side of me...
abmann From: abmann Date: January 7th, 2007 04:47 am (UTC) (Link)
Heh. Maybe, maybe not. Maybe you just dig the onion. Or my manly, fake vein-y chest. :P
blackdreams From: blackdreams Date: January 7th, 2007 04:14 am (UTC) (Link)
No! It looks like you have an organ in your mouth, that's why!
freaked me out a minute until I realized what it really was!
abmann From: abmann Date: January 7th, 2007 04:15 am (UTC) (Link)
heh. I like that people are creeped out by it.
blackdreams From: blackdreams Date: January 7th, 2007 04:18 am (UTC) (Link)
I didn't even notice the veins either until I started reading everyone elses comments. I was curious to see what other people thought that was.
