Awesome.

I just spent I don't know how long looking at the 2, and I cannot decide which is better. They're both amazing. :)

You should see it duotone red. :) Looks like microbes.

I definitely like this one better than the gradient one. It's more my style.

You knitters are all the same. Color color color!

replace "knitters" with "fiber artists" and you are correct. :)

I actually do like the other one better... mostly because with the black and white edges, it's easier to ignore the blurriness of some of the edges. :)

Very pretty.

The blurry edges are from depth of field effects. I was focusing on the plane of the one most prominent, off center left. Anything above (bottom right corner) or below (bottom left and top right corners) will be blurry. That's physics.

Yes, I know. I'm not saying it shouldn't be blurry, I'm saying that I like the black and white because it emphasizes the blur less.

To all of my roommates:

Anybody wanna chip in some $$ and get one of these printed for the kitchen? I'd love to have it framed on the wall above the kitchen table.

This is much better. The fade-to-grayscale one looked a bit... "OMG teh photochop", honestly.

Are you just seeing them both now or did you hold back commenting that until you saw this version?
ralinad From: ralinad Date: September 29th, 2006 02:52 pm (UTC) (Link)
I saw the other one yesterday but didn't say anything. This is clearly much better.

Aha! Should said something earlier. May haev gotten me to point B faster. :) I agree, it felt like a wee bit too much which is why I played with it more last night.

Well, "too much" can be good sometimes, but what I usually come back to is what looks like it -could- be done on film. Keeping one item in color on B&W - can be done. Saturation, layering, spot editing - those can all be done, if with a LOT more effort. However the gradual fade to BW looks... well, the best term I can think of is "amateur". Its sort of the same reason you don't use the "plastic wrap" filter or "lens flare". Its kind of saying "lookie lookie lookie photoshop"

You obviously have the skills in the program, but try to be subtle. The photo shouldn't be overwhelmed by the work you did to it afterwards, unless there is a reason. Your photos are getting much better, and its good to go too far sometimes to determine where that line of "too much" is for you.

Regardless, nice photo.
