The editors either think:
1) Americans don't care.
2) Americans don't need to know.
3) Americans won't understand.

I'm curious, also, if it was a choice not to detract from the "War on Terror." In this case, I wonder about the usually left leaning Newsweek's affiliations.

4. Americans don't want to know.

Or option 2: The editors don't think, they're told.

I have to say that from what little I've seen, American media scares me.

Actually, generally media scares me.
Maybe 'scare' isn't the right word.

at www.news.com.au we have the Brownlow Medal winner with pride of place (It's some sports award, not sure which one), and Steve Irwin is STILL in the bloody news.

On the ABC website, we usually have more-rounded news stories, at www.abc.net.au/news we have a story about water and Sol Trujilo (which I think is kind of justified as he's here to ruin our already ruined telecommunications company).

I really like BBC world news, it's still the best I've found online.

American media is so skewed it's scary.
I've heard from a number of people that BBC news tends to be the best for national headlines.
