I am no injun. - Portrait of a Young Man as The Artist — LiveJournal
I am no injun.
Today has been pretty lame.

Playing Ojibway Playing Ojibway

ISO 200
exp 1/60

This one was kind of strange. I had to crop the hell out of the original because something was in the way of the woman's (thegman169's grandmother's) face.

I used the shadows/highlights tool to extend the length of the shadows to lighten it up that we could see his face. To emphasize the lighting and his expression I desaturated to 50% of the color.

As a weird last minute addition, I put a sepia filter and a cooling (blue 80) filter over it. This created a really odd nostalgic and sullen mood in my opinion that was in this man's face.

Shooting from the hip means the occasional off-kilter photo. Be glad I didn't crop it to just your boobs. :P

Again, I say, wow.

I wonder why the eyes are so red on his headdress. I don't recall noticing them as such when he wandered into our conversation.

Huh... dunno. Maybe you were more intent on other things?

The interior fabic of the hat was red. I did notice it that day because it looked creepy.

I like the cropped photo, but I would have lightened/colored it differently....the cool overcast is nice, but the colors aren't very intense - they seem a bit faded. (hope you don't mind the impromptu art critic here) You can tell me to MYOB anytime...

I post because I want feedback.

I desaturated the colors intentionally. I was going for moody, sullen, old feelings. The actual colors look pretty deep even with the overcast sky as you can see in the original photo.

It just didn't feel as right with the full stremgth colors.

When I look at the cropped photo, the person almost looks like a wax figure or a mannequin. I love the somber mood that the softer coloration gives the rest of the photo, but it seems to have smoothed just a bit too much life out of your subjects skin texture & color.

The cropped photo seems blurry and weird.

Is it due to my changes do you think?
Blurry how? It seems pretty sharp. Maybe the color distortion is leading you to that?

Yes, the color distortion makes the lines between objects blend in my mind. Most noticably where the back of the headdress meets the sky. The result, at least for me, is that the picture appears out of focus.

See. You sound like an expert already. :)

I really like that you kept just a bit of the grandmother's hair in there.

I was so confused before I clicked the LJ-cut. I was halfway convinced that you were trying to tell us that the bearded man was somebody's grandmother.

It's been a long day.

Well Done, Will! This is one of the best pictures you've done! Softening the colors was an excellent move - the picture now looks melancholy, sullen, like the weight of the world is suddenly on his shoulders. It's a beautiful shot.

I'm really liking teh photos!

Would you mind if I saved them and added them to my desktop pictures folder? (So I they will just pop up randomly as my desktop picture.)

I don't like the composition of the cropped photo at all. The man dominates the photo, and since the trees don't quite make it to his head, they're at odds with each other. I think I noticed this because what you did with colors makes the background a bit more prominent than usual.

That said, I love what you captured in his face. And I think the color changes are really suited to that.

On a tangential note, I actually like the uncropped photo better. I love the incongruity between the melancholy white-native american man and the average pair of old grandma and college-y girl. I don't think the paper in her face takes away as much as you think (though it would be better if it weren't there). I'd be interested in seeing that photo color-shifted to emphasize the melancholy, because if you don't process the man as melancholy you don't get the cool effect that I had when seeing him pretty much at odds with his surroundings.
