This is true and I have talked to some coffee shops. Many handle their art through outside galleries which I'd have to join in order to display there. This costs me money and seems unnecessarily complicated.

However, I just remembered a coffee shop that's opening on the east side that had an open call in the Isthmus. I'll have to try that one again.

Then there's the question if coffee shop goers actually buy the art on the walls. :)

well, there is that. Also just getting things printed nicely large enough and framed nicely costs a small fortune as well.

I have a few free prints from The Camera Co they gave me when I bought my camera, so that's not too bad. I plan on doing my own matting and framing assuming I can find good stuff, likely also to be found at The Camera Co. That'll save some money.

So yeah.. I really just need to stop being lazy.

one place that 've worked with is HUE gallery on monroe street.

i don't think they have many photographers right now (only one member, and me, kind of, though i haven't displayed photog yet, just jewelry)

you could make an appointment with them. they either do consignment, or if you become a member (which involves paying a membership fee and volunteering a few hours a month) they take less of a percentage on pieces sold and also guarantee one solo show a year for member-artists. i've been meaning to join, but haven't had the funds yet.

Have they a website which I could peruse?

yes, though it's not particularly informative. 9though it looks like it's gotten better recently.)

Yeah, that site does kinda suck. :) I'll have to walk over there again some Saturday with portfolio and gets me some questions answered.

i'm not sure who you'd want to talk to. i know erin dows the jewelry, but not sure who does photo.

they *were* interested in a couple of my photography ideas, so maybe a group show in the future is in order.

i'd go scope it out first, and ask for an appointment. i'm not sure if it'll be erin and rachel there on the weekend, or one of the member volunteers. (and in general, if you want in someplace, it's more professional to get an appt. than just showing up and expecting to be seen.) and scoping it out first always helps make sure it's a good fit for your work, as well!

You can't be professional until you sell something!!! I'm an impetuous young ragamuffin.

I never expect anything. I just show up and see what happens. :)

mm, ragamuffin.

new homework assignment (start handing things in, or i'll give you an incomplete!)

go through your archive, and put together two dozen images you think are portfolio worthy. not necessarily the oens you think are cutest, but the most striking ones. we'll cull that down to ten, and you could make your first set of prints from there.

(so, unfortunately, make sure you can print at least a 5x7" at 300dpi.)
