Web server
Dear LJ people,

Where can I go to learn how to build a web server? I wish to use OpenSource products because I'm cheap and like free support. I have an XP desktop currently that I may have to kill to get this together, but I'm willing to sacrifice Sims 2 to do it. Unless of course, someone knows good OpenSource server software that will run on XP.

&hearts,
Me

http://httpd.apache.org/

even available for Windows

If you plan on hosting this at your house, charter doesn't look fondly on that.

Any way around Charter's lame-itude?

buy buisness class service? or look into a hosting provider, thats what I did. I didn't feel like having to keep yet another machine protected and patched and whatnot. I do enough of that as it is.

Part of the hope was avoid paying for webhosting adn having better control of my stuff. I'll have to look into the price of business service from Charter. Blah. Free the internets!

Maybe I should stash it near the Capitol's free wirless. :)

Apache.

There's a version for Windows.

Don't run it on port 80.

Why not port 80?

Because that's the default HTTP port, and will make it so painfully easy to notice you're running a web server that even Charter's dolts will catch on.

It's also possible that they just block traffic inbound to port 80 for residential custoners, so it might not even work.

Although I haven't tested that out, and I actually kind of doubt they have the technical acumen to actually manage it.

You should break into the craftroom and continue to benefit from Beloit. Afterall, being an alumni should come with some kind of benefit beyond those lame ass postcards and phone calls I keep getting.

Plus, literally stealing bandwidth is hilarious.

I had considered using Rincewind to host but that could endager it for everyone else. I don't want to ruin it for everyone in the off chance that what I do becomes popular.

Mum's the word, cracka.

I didn't say use rincewind. I said break in and set up your own server box. It doesn't even have to be in the bsffa craftroom. Put that bitch in the ceiling of any unused space on campus and you're golden unless a pipe breaks or something.

You're hosting porn aren't you? AREN'T YOU!?

I would just like to point out for you, since noone here seems to be AMAZING LIKE ME (*menace*) that changing the port of a webserver does not necessarily protect you from getting ye olde swifte kicke in the pantse. Your ISP can profile your traffic by protocol regardless of which port is accessed. That's how Beloit monitors traffic on their network, by the by. This is important for college campuses because certain applications, such as bittorrent, do not require any particular port range. They can use any port you want. I guarantee you that Charter has vastly greater resources than Beloit.

It's all a blur.

I should also note that personal anecdotes do not an argument make. Ahem yourself.
