Point? - Portrait of a Young Man as The Artist — LiveJournal
Dear MoveOn member,

In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, it's clear that we're less safe than we thought.
Four years after September 11th, the federal government failed to respond to an
emergency every bit as dire as a terrorist attack—and it is likely thousands

We need an independent Katrina Commission, modeled after the 9/11 Commission,
to find out what went wrong. But the White House, working off a "Don't Look
Back" strategy, refuses to consider one.1 Instead, President Bush has suggested
that he and his Republican allies in Congress will lead the investigation—a
recipe for a cover up2.

Right.. because the 9/11 commission was so effective...

Fun movie. :) I liked the cartoon. My favorite was the episode that adapted the Baba Yaga fairy tale. I had the toy version of her.

MoveOn is quite enamored with the petition. Some how, I do not presuppose that G-dub will listen to petitions - or many members of congress, for that matter.

Though the 9/11 report wasn't "effective" it has done a marvellous job doing what it's supposed to do - analyze the information and make recommendations. These independent commissions can't rewrite laws and or promulgate new laws... They just recommend things.

As for recommendations they make some really good focused and specific ones... Most commissions (I know, I used to serve on one...) make loose, fluid recommendations like, "better management of essential resources." They are political and don't want to piss off anyone, so they don't say anything. The 9/11 commission was able to really avoid a lot of politicing by pretty much slapping everybody around. The 9/11 commission made some pretty good recommendations - "The DHS, Properly supported by Congress, should complete... a biometric entry-exit system, including a single system for speeding qualified travelers" (9/11 commission report, p389).

I actually READ a commission report - strange, eh? They really deviated from the standard government report format and made this whole thing accessable to the public and readable by non-government laypersons.
