In our house fire, my cat died.

Most of my stuff (sewing machine, etc) survived -- the LCD screen on my stereo died, but the rest of it still works. I threw out my radio, vibrator, iron, and other electronics, not trusting them. I spent a long time wiping off all my books from the soot. I got a new futon. I went to a laundromat in Stoughton and did about 13 loads of laundry at once. I threw out a lot of polyester (it holds smoke). Most of my house plants died (it was February and there was a big hole in the house).

In our house fire, I learned that things are not terribly important, but people and my relationships with them are. House/renter's insurance... also rather important.

Were we to have a fire now, I might grab my external hard drive (lightweight and small) but mostly I'd grab my girl.

Also please note that when you grab your cat/dog they will probably bite and scratch you, and otherwise make it really hard for you to pick up anything else.

I was actually out of town when the fire happened, so I didn't have a choice about any of it. I'm kind of glad I wasn't there though.
