Stand UP
Stand UP

I got sick of back and neck pain and struggling with my chair. So: improvised standing desk.

I no longer have a little file cabinet.
And I can't recall the last time I filed anything...

DUDE.

I have been shopping for standing desks and they are impossible to find here and you just flicked a huge light switch on in my head.

I dedicate my future homemade standing desk to you.

I am trying this today, prompted by your post and this infographic, using a pile of books - but now my lower back hurts instead. Grr, I am bad at standing too.

Yeah, it's certainly different. My feet were hurting but I think it was from that particular pair of FiveFingers having a harder soul.

Lower back pain is usually because you're sticking your butt out too far... (I do this HORRIBLY) The tips I get are to squeeze your gluts, and keep your lower abs engaged...

Might help...

I like the idea of Will working at his standing desk while making mindless thrusting motions as he rhythmically squeezes his gluts and engages the lower abs.

Strike that.

I really like the idea of the look on his office mate's face.

(for the purpose of this comment, lets just assume he has an office mate)

I support your suggestion! :D

I don't have an office mate any more. :) I'm IMPORTANT

My lower back pain was from elevated heels on my shoes; that could be it too because we are, like, exactly the same, thian_un and I. People thought we were twins at Beloit.

Bahaha. Why didn't I see this yesterday?
I'm not wearing shoes at my desk, but maybe I should have something between me and the hard wood floor.

Yep, my PT and I have been trying to address that! Nicely diagnosed! :)

hah! It helps when that's what I've been fighting with for, oh, years...

Good luck! If you get any good tips, let me know, because the two I have only go so far...

I realize now that PT sounds like personal trainer, but it's actually physical therapist - screwed up some stuff in my right hip/knee last summer, still dealing with the after effects. Blarg.

She has me working on lower ab exercises to bring awareness to my core and help me balance out the low back constriction. And doing bridges while trying to keep most of the work in the low abs, less in the gluts. Also recommends spending 15 mins a day at least in restorative bridge to help stretch out the low back.

Ugh... I hope you get back to normal soon.

Good tips. Thank you. :)

Em switched to the standing desk set up a few months ago when she read about some upper muckity muck in GE's marketing division doing it. She says she really likes it. The only down side is people look at her weird because her head sticks up over the cubeville.

If a standing desk is good enough for Donald Rumsfeld, it's good enough for me. One can perpetrate way more war crime when standing all day.

It's true. You care way less about human rights after you've been standing around all day.

If there's anything that teaching in the Delta taught me...
