Actually, it's a poor choice of words. :) Vignettes come from light falloff around the edge of photo film or camera sensor. If the lens is built poorly or it is really wide, it doesn't evenly distribute light to the far edges so the photo is exposed less there, thus being darker than the center of the shot.

So.. shadow in the sense that there's less light there?
