Portrait of a Young Man as The Artist

    A few things:
  1. We locked in our mortgage rate.
    • We signed the documents in a parking lot. Our loan officer agreed that it was delightfully shady.
  2. We will have Thanksgiving this year in the house. :D
  3. We will also have lady_fox's first 30th birthday in our house!
  4. I managed to panic myself thinking about various unknowns on the place...
    • Namely the water bill and subletting our apartment. The former isn't really a big deal but the latter worries me thoroughly.
  5. We reviewed dozens of retro styles online in preparation for potential changes to the kitchen.
  6. Brunch at the Orpheum randomly on Sunday was great.
That's all I got. Inspection is on Wednesday. That should be interesting.

Current Mood: anxious anxious

Just some random online sites. I think I search terms were 'glass tiles' or 'retro kitchen backsplash' and the like. We'll look locally when we get serious after we move in.

The ReStore over on the east side usually has some neat tiles.

How are they on quantity?

Depends. Sometimes they're one offs, sometimes they have good ones that have been torn out of a house, or donated because they had overages. It's a crap shoot, but you can find some good deals there.

This is exciting! :)

I think going retro is fine as long as everything is done nicely. That seems to be a general rule. Also, I don't see a lot of point in worrying *too much* about resale value - the big part of having your own home is making it.. your own home.. :)

You're right, we should make it awesome for us. I just feel bad for wanting to remove the really nice tile backsplash in there now. :)

We saw some of the most fantastically ugly kitchens this weekend. Like floor to ceiling plaid wallpaper or Bright yellow flower applique on any and all surfaces. I loved them so much it scares me. :)

We're thinking of doing a modern wool shag throw if we can find it in the same color as the tile we want. Mmm.. shag.

A1) Your lender doesn't even have an office do they?
B2) You got your mortgage money in cash, didn't you?
C3) DIDN'T YOU?
D4) When do you move in?
E5) I demand pictures justifying your choice of the 70s. I contend that nothing good ever happened or came out of the 70s and therefore you might as well be decorating your kitchen in nazi propaganda and shizer film stills.
XN) Have you considered decorating your ceilings in shag?

Yes.

Close date hasn't be decided. In the offer contract we said Nov 15th. We're gonna see of the bank will set it as the 13th so we can move that weekend rather than having to take time off for it.

The house was built in the 70s according to the tax records.

I shagged your mom's ceilings.

Well played sir, well played.

Oh, in all seriousness, you should put in a sauna. It's one of the best renovations you can make to increase the value of your home.
abmann From: abmann Date: October 5th, 2009 02:23 pm (UTC) (Link)
Sauna? Why?
nathan_lounge From: nathan_lounge Date: October 5th, 2009 02:28 pm (UTC) (Link)
It's one of a very small list of things that you can actually see positive return on investment when it comes to home renovation. Most things won't cash out for you. A sauna will cost a couple grand, less if you're willing to do all the work yourself, and can return 100-200% above cost on the resell value of the home.

Dude, if you put in a sauna, I will be over there EVERY DAY.

That may not be a good thing.

I shagged your mom's sauna.

It just seems like an odd thing to put in a house. Maybe outside near a hot tub...
nathan_lounge From: nathan_lounge Date: October 5th, 2009 03:07 pm (UTC) (Link)
No more odd than a hot chicks room.

Besides, it'll go great with your home gym and full-sized basketball court.
abmann From: abmann Date: October 5th, 2009 03:11 pm (UTC) (Link)
Oh, we've got the hot chicks room planned.

Basket ball court, eh? Maybe a nice gym in the back behind the deck.

Shotgun caboose!

Also, you didn't explain that you were moving to LA. How ya' gonna have a gym in the backyard snow Willis?

Uh. Cellophane. Duh....

Just don't get retro appliances. I had a douchebag twat of a landlord once who did that... spent forever on Craigslist hunting down old appliances instead of just buying new ones. Of course they didn't work as well and ran up the bills due to being inefficient... and he wasted a couple months before caving and just getting us a new refrigerator.

You know you want a room with shag carpet and a disco ball.
