Walkabout

An interesting phlogging session today. I set my camera to shoot monochrome to make it interesting and partially because I failed to find a single flower with yesterday's phlogging. Phlogabout. Photabout?

Suffice that shoot with total disregard for color is really cool. Especially when I got the shots into Aperture and learned that it ignores the monochrome layer that my camera adds to the RAW file. At first, I was annoyed and blanket applied a monochrome filter before I edited them.

Then, after applying my typical adjustments I removed the monochrome layers. And it was revelation. Well, not really but it was nifty to see how a focus on form can make for a good photo. Color is almost, almost, unnecessary but it certainly can add that extra kick in the pants to even the most mundane subject.

Uh oh.

Very nice. I pay primary attention to form and composition. Good color is just icing on the cake. Especially after a year of black&white film classes, I tend to think in greyscale.

I didn't realize I payed as close attention to color. It was a neat exercise.

You and your fancy book learning and rewells.

I think the only Changling sort I've not been described as is Redcap. I need to start eating everything.

Odd, I never imagined seeing you getting into nature. It's good though, I think the variety lends you into learning different styles and techniques you can apply elsewhere.

That leaf makes me crave potato chips for some reason. Curses!

I think the weather had me. I'm not much for it, really, but I think it is mostly because I'm not especially good at nature or macro photography. these have been a direct exercise in getting better at both, be a more rounded photographer.

I'm also bored shooting street in Madison. It's all the same.

Actually, this probably explains the potato chip connection since you're using your food porn eye to take some of these shots, aren't you? There's something about it that screams "Nom!" for me.

I'm kind of surprised about the macro comment though: you've got a nice lil' macro lens, don't you? Not enough time to mess around with it?

These are amazing.

I really like the spider, chain, shoe, first flower and last red buds. Wow.

Dang, man, you're getting better and better at this! If I saw these at an art gallery there are some I would very seriously consider hanging on my wall, and at least one I would actually buy if I had the money to buy art at this point in my life!

I think even between the two days there was marked improvement. This is mostly because I stopped being stupid and paid attention to camera settings on top of form.

You know where to find me if you want to buy prints. :)

Wow, these are really really awesome! I read an article in Rangefinder about a man who was colorblind but still was famous for his photography. I definitely agree that once you have the form right, the color just comes along on it's own.

Yeah, color is a bonus. Though you have more flexibility if you can control which channel on which to make the monochrome photo.

Well, you know, I suppose he can still do that as he can see the gray shading differences between the channels. Hmm...

Clearly I need to remove some of the cones in my eyes.
