This is a neat story and makes me want even more to code my own… - Portrait of a Young Man as The Artist

This is a neat story and makes me want even more to code my own portfolio app:
City Poems: Victor Keegan, retired Guardian tech editor, codes first iPhone app at 70
It is a location-aware poetry tour of London.

I spent moments yesterday morning emailing photography application developers about resolution issues. Many think I'll never be able to load, let alone edit, larger JPGs into active memory on the iPad. One of them though it may be possible in iPhone OS 4.0 depending on the APIs Apple allows. So, I guess I"ll see. For now, I'm tethered to a laptop if I want printable versions of my photos.

We could argue the utility of that given that no one requests prints.

Question: How do you feel about digital picture frames?

Wasteful.

Wasteful?

Yeah, they require batteries or electricity to work where prints use only the associated power and parts of the printing process. Prints also don't break or install viruses on your computer.

If you ignore those particular points (which are good points), what do you think about them as mediums to display photography?

Sometimes I should be more clear with my questions.

Also, did your username change when I wasn't looking?

Setting that aside, I think digital display of photos can be wonderful and more interesting than prints. Mostly, the atmospheric details surrounding digital prints are far more varied and nuanced because the photos then generate their own light. You can manipulate this AND ambient light to create a more dramatic and engaging experience. Technology, in this case, extends the overall artistic experience.

It also means that it is easier to display lower resolution photos in better form. It makes thinks like iPhone Photography a viable and interesting medium akin to plastic camera photography.

I changed it this morning. I'd been dithering for a while. no reason not to consolidating all my online names into one.

I didn't notice until I got an email alert to your first comment on my question. Had you changed your default icon at the same time, I wouldn't have recognized you!

I think his beard accentuates his skepticism.

I find I am more skeptical when I have my beard grown out.

With great beard comes great introspection.

I find myself, for some unexplainable reason, curiously unconvinced on the veracity of this claim.

Poetry tour! I hope someone codes one of those for the whole world. Then I might actually buy an iPhone.

How are your coding skills? If this guy can do it... :)

I think my laptop is still downloading the iPhone SDK, maybe I'll have a chance to code something in a decade or so.
